A Comparison of the Perception on Successful Aging of Korean and Japanese University Students
Kim Yun-Jeong

Abstract
This study was carried out to empirically confirm that there is a cultural difference in concept of successful aging between Korea and Japan. The data were collected from 291 Korean and 295 Japanese university students through questionnaire method. For the study, two scales were simultaneously used to increase validity of research: one was Korean scale which was developed by Baek and Choi(2005), the other was SOC strategy developed by Baltes etc. (1999). First, when using Korean scale, Korean students were more concerned about relationship-oriented character, but Japanese students were likely to focus on the individualistic character to be successful for the old age. Second, when SOC strategy were applied to the research method, Korean students had higher score in most questions of selective, optimization and compensation than Japanese students. Scores for Korean students ranged from late 3 to early 4 point, but for Japanese student sticked to around 2 point. On the other hand, in case of scores of complement, there were items that no differences between two groups existed, and that Japanese students had higher score than Korean students. Third, discriminant analysis showed that the main discriminant factor was ¡¯healthy and satisfactory life¡¯, and second factor was ¡¯purposive and productive life¡¯. Three factor of selective, optimization and compensation also contributed to significant discrimination of two groups. It was meaningful that the study found that cultural gaps in successful aging must exist empirically.
